Sepunka's Birthday

Here we are, staring down the business end of a hot June and celebrating another biorthday in the MTM family of supporters. Therefore, we get another mix to while away the hot summer and cake and ice cream that seems to be ever ine our midst.

For this mix, I've put together an odd assortment of stuff, some of which comes from a couple of local Miami bands, both of which I keep wanting to go check out, but never find the time to: Him Genuis and Whatever Happened to the Dinorsaurs. (Both of which have CDs for sale, for cheap at their myspace.com accounts.)

I've also included a song by Jack Johnson from the Curious George soundtrack that is simple enough, but when we play it in the store, we all joke is really just about something else. Since this is all in honor of Sepunka's birthday, I'll let you all figure that out for yourselves.

And for once, there's no Pink Floyd connection. . . Well, except for the fact that one band in this list did cover a Pink Floyd song. (Ambulance LTD covered "Fearless" on an EP recently).

A survey I filled out for some friends. . .

"Nights in White Satin" - Moody Blues
8. Describe what you want to be:
"You're the Devil (in Disguise)" - Elvis Presley
9. Describe where you live:
"Bitches Brew" - Miles Davis
10. Describe how you make love:
"Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" - Pink Floyd
11. What would you ask for if you had just one wish:

2001

Little factoid. . .

Since I put up the hit counter sometime last summer, we've had our 2001 site visit. Now, I know most of them are Meera's and my own, but I'm happy to toot my own horn for visiting my own site so much.

And to those of you who visit and download regularly, thank you.

Mid-June and Hurricanes

So here we are, in Florida and waiting expectantly for another tropical system to nail another portion of our coastline. Thankfully, nowhere near here in Miami, where we're not even getting heavy rains, just clouds and dreariness. I've managed to make a pair of mixes for everyone to enjoy this week. The first is a mix for the wonderful, Rhina, who recently had a birthday and is one of the best icon makers in the non-existent business.

The second is a mix of groups that sound a lot like older, more established bands in one way or another. These are groups some critics like to call "derivative," meaning they've got no artistic merit on their own (with the Mars Volta being the main exception to this rule.) Personally, having loved a lot the originals, I quite enjoy where some of these "imitators" are taking their influences. It came out pretty spacey on the whole, but you all know how much I enjoy spacey, psychedelic music. . .

Mid-June Mix for Rhina pt. 1 and Pt 2

2006: A Quick One

This has been one hell of a year for rock music, in my humble opinion. I've just been reflecting on it, and more and more I am astounded at the level of material coming out this year. We've got some of the best work coming out from a lot of older, established groups that came out in the past six months, and there's been more than a few, cool new smaller albums and side projects. I might have mentioned a lot of these bands before, and you'll be seeing some of this stuff in future mixes.

Some lists you should all check out:

Paul Simon "Surprise"
Pearl Jam "Pearl Jam"
Neil Young "Living With War"
Tool "10,000 Days"
OSI "Free"
Donovan Frankenreiter "Move By Yourself"
Lupe Fiasco (I'm not sure what it will be called, but it's not released yet. I just like what I've heard so far. He even samples Floyd)
Gnarls Barkley "St. Elsewhere"
People in Planes "As Far As the Eye Can See. . . "

Just a quick list, other people have said intelligent things on all this before, so I won't waste words.

New mixes up tomorrow.

Psychedelic Sunshine for Summer

It's the start of summer, and yeah, I'm doing yet another psychedelic mix for everyone's consumption. This weeks we've got an odd assortment of music from all over the globe, and probably one or two of these tracks don't quite qualify as "psychedelic" but they help create the overall vibe of the mix. This time, as well, it's all fairly mainstream stuff. I didn't bother with the Jefferson Airplane of the other big San Fransico stuff, mostly because I haven't been feeling that kind of vibe lately, but I did keep it all fairly straight ahead.

Oh yeah, there's something in me that can't quite call that astral traveler known as Jimi Hendrix "a San Fransisco Hippy" even though he was all around that scene.

So here's the mix:

Psychedelic Sunshine for Summer

1. T. Rex - Once Upon The Seas Of Abyssinia
2. Cyrkle - Red Rubber Ball
3. Jimmy Curtiss - Psychodelic Situations
4. The Lovin' Spoonful - Coconut Grove
5. Spanky & Our Gang - Echoes (Everybody's Talkin')
6. Love - She Comes In Colors
7. Strawberry Alarm Clock - Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow
8. Serge Gainsbourg - Requiem Pour Un C
9. Pink Floyd - Embryo
10. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Third Stone From The Sun
11. Forum Quorum - Synopsis
12. Super Eagles--Love´s A Real Thing
13. Rolling Stones - The Lantern
14. 13th Floor Elevators - Splash I (Now I'm Home)
15. Kaleidoscope - Flight From Ashya
16. Paul Kantner, Grace Slick & David Freiberg - Flowers Of The Night
17. Tommy James & The Shondells - I'm Alive

Another Evening, Another Week, Another Post

I feel that I've been fairly neglectful of my little project here in recent weeks having been caught up in a massive undertaking that is reading Tad William's Memory, Thorn and Sorrow series. Brilliant series for those of you who read Tolkien-esqu fantasy series, but prefer them not to be so . . . "Tolkien-esque."

Moving on, in order to make up for things, I've assembled this latest mix of favourites. These are songs I'm cabable of listening to over and over and over again, much to the annoyance of those around me. It's a little dark, but when I was discovering some of these favourites, I was writing, or experience some rather bleak things. I've got a couple more of these set and ready to go, but I might not release them just yet. And yes, I've used a lot of these songs quite a few times over the past year. I loved them that much.

So here we are, The Mad Terran's Favourite Songs (pt.1)

1. Tommy James & The Shondells - Crimson & Clover
2. Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade of Pale
3. Norah Jones - Come Away With Me
4. The Beach Boys - Kokomo
5. The Lovin' Spoonful - Summer In The City
6. The Box Tops - The Letter
7. The Beatles - Yellow Submarine
8. Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels
9. Otis Redding - The Dock Of The Bay
10. The Who - Behind Blue Eyes
11. A Perfect Circle - The Noose
12. The Mars Volta - The Widow
13. Porcupine Tree - Radioactive Toy
14. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
15. Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
